Why is my african dwarf frog bloated?

There are two reasons why your frogs are becoming “fat”, bloating or getting ready to lay eggs. Okay, so if your frog seems like it is becoming very large and fat, you may be worried about bloating. African dwarf frogs can be prone to develop a condition known as bloating or illness, known as dropsy. It can also be caused by more gentle forms or simply experiencing bloating. Dropsy (also called edema, hydropsy ascites, and the bloat) is a sign of massive bloating in pets frogs. The reason your frog’s stomach is so full is due to the fluids that have built within their body. This fluid might appear to have appeared overnight and caused your frog to feel extremely uncomfortable.

If your frog’s body is getting extremely fat and round, it’s almost like a balloon about to pop, and your abdomen is extremely flat and smooth, it’s probably bloated and is not carrying eggs. Female carrying eggs, when she’s actually filled with eggs, could look like a box of marbles. Also, it is possible to spot the individual eggs.

When African dwarf frogs carry eggs, they won’t take in as much food as they normally do however they will consume. However, African dwarf frogs that have bloated bodies probably won’t consume in any way. There are certain bloating issues such as dropsy that cannot be removed, but there are other, less severe forms of bloat that can be treated.

Bloating could result from a number of causes. If the belly bulges off without eggs being laid, it’s because your African dwarf frogs weren’t expecting.

Be aware of the fact that African dwarf frogs require these particular conditions (water level and temperature variations) to start laying eggs. Additionally, there need to be males within the tank. If none of these occurs or has occurred then your frog is constipated and not pregnant.
