The dragonfly is a flying insect that catches prey in its legs. The dragonfly has large transparent wings held by a row of long, brown veins. There are various types of dragonflies: the yellow-striped marsh; the most common Asian darner; the long-tailed blue, which is bright turquoise with black markings and a long tail; and the soldier, which is mostly black with blue spots. Dragonflies spend winters as larvae in water or mud where they find worms, crustaceans, and small fish to eat.

Dragonflies are among the tiniest of flying insects, and they only have two functional wings. These soaring reptiles have earned their name from their ability to fly effortlessly and rapidly through the air. Dragonflies have also been characterized by their eyes that can see in all directions at once, and for the way that they hover about in the air with such agility.

Do dragonflies have nests?

Scientists do not know for sure if dragonflies build nests. Females construct noteggs, which are hard cases that protect their eggs as they develop into larvae. The females guard these eggs, moving them from place to place and fanning them with their wings to ensure that the eggs do not dry out.
