What time do bald eagles hunt?

Bald eagles hunt two times a day. Adults eat for about half an hour in the morning and then again later in the afternoon or evening. Bird’s just entering maturity, or juveniles, are able to capture their own food and hunt alone. This usually begins when they are one year old, or between six and 10 months old. Juveniles may continue hunting as often as every other day.

Bald eagles hunt for food all throughout the day. During the winter, they feed on fish and waterfowl, such as ducks or geese. Bald eagles are opportunistic and will eat whatever is easiest to catch. During the spring, summer, and fall, bald eagles feed on a wider variety of prey, including small mammals like rabbits and squirrels. Because of this diverse diet, bald eagles can exist in huge numbers in any area that supports a good number of waterfowl, such as marshes or along rivers.

Bald eagles are one of the largest birds in North America with a wingspan that can reach up to 7 feet across. They have excellent eyesight and can spot their prey from great distances. When an eagle spots food, it swoops down from its perch and grabs it with its talons without ever touching the ground.

Bald eagles mate for life. They build large nests made from sticks, which are called eyries. Nests are usually located high in trees near large bodies of water where prey is plentiful. The female lays between one to three eggs per year and incubates them for about 3 days.

5 days before they hatch. Both parents help take care of the nestlings until they are large enough. Bald eagles hunt at dawn when they are most active. They feed throughout the day, but mostly in the morning and evening. This is also a great time to spot them as they float overhead, looking for food.
