What does a peacock sound like?

What does a peacock sound like? It is not only the beauty of the peacock’s tail but also his beautiful voice. When he spreads his tail to attract female peacocks, he let out sweet and loud calls. The female will usually answer him with another call. What is the “language” between these two? Only God knows I guess. But we can’t help but be fascinated by these animals and their beautiful sounds.

There is a type of animal called peacock mantis shrimp, which lives in the sea. It has a very loud voice as well as a beautiful body. Some people even believed that this creature was the ancestor of the peacock’s tail! Peacock mantis shrimps live around coral reefs or other places with lots of plants and algae. They usually eat smaller creatures such as shrimp, krill, crabs, worms, etc. They have strong front legs to grab their prey perfectly! A kind of color-changing mechanism is found on their eyes which helps them see better when it’s dark! These shrimps are known for their blue/green/purple colors.

Peacock mantis shrimps have the ability to produce loud sounds. Most of them are around 200 decibels, however, some can even reach 273! For comparison, a human being is about 60 decibels. The sound is produced by slapping its front limbs on the sea surface or any solid objects nearby. These two claws are also very useful for hunting/fighting etc. There is another type of peacock mantis shrimp that has only one large claw instead of two. It uses this big claw to slap its prey down and then finishes it off with its smaller claws (like most peacock mantis shrimps actually). When they fight each other, this “performance” usually goes on for hours until somebody gets hurt.

We are very lucky to have these beautiful creatures on our planet. Sometimes, we take them for granted and forget how special they are.
