Ensure that the top of the highest headset spacer is at least 5mm shorter than the length of the steerer tube.

How long should my steerer tube be?

As long as it doesn’t protrude too far from top of stem, the steerer tube needs to have sufficient clamping contact with the stem to prevent headset from being tightened.

Should you cut your fork steerer?

Trimming your fork steerer is necessary if you’re putting in an entirely new fork, building a bike from a frame, or deciding that an extra inch above the stem isn’t worth it.

Are all steerer tubes the same size?

Most steerer tubes are 1 and 1/8th of an inch or 28.6mm, but there are a few that are 1 and 1/4th of an inch or 31.75mm. Remove the top cap from your stem and measure the diameter of the stem’s inner diameter.

How many spacers should a headset have?

Headset spacers typically range from 20 to 30 millimetres in length and can be shifted freely above or below the stem on most bikes.

How much space should be above steerer tube?

There should be a small gap between the stem or spacers and top of the steerer tube (approximately 3mm). The headset cannot be adjusted if it is below the steerer tube or flush with it. Buy additional spacers of various sizes to achieve the desired height.

What size steerer tube do I need?

You’ll need to take two measurements to get an accurate reading. As you can see in this picture, there is a significant difference in both the OD (outside diameter), as well as the OD (bottom diameter) of the steerer tube (where the headset crown race sits, as in the pic below).

Can you cut a carbon steerer tube with a pipe cutter?

Yes, this tool can be used on both aluminium and steel steerers. ‘ The advantage is that you get a clean cut. Because the spacers and the stem need to slide on smoothly, the lip is usually left behind. This means that cutting with a hacksaw in a guide and then filing the top square is usually slower than this method.

How long is the steerer tube on a new fork?

For most medium-sized frames and some large-sized frames, a 190mm steerer tube should work. Between 190 and 200mm in length, most of my forks have 10 to 20mm of spacers under the stem. Some manufacturers, on the other hand, make their head tubes a bit longer.

What is a downtube on a bike?

The tube that leads down to the ground. An important part of a bicycle is its down tube. Some mountain and hybrid bikes have derailleur cables that run along or inside the down tube, depending on the model. The shift levers on older racing bicycles were attached to the down tube.

What is a fork crown race?

Your fork’s steerer tube has a crown race installed at the bottom – a crown race is an angled surface, or race, that interfaces with the bottom bearing.

Will a tapered steerer fit my bike?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Some models from Cane Creek, however, allow for the use of tapered forks in two straight head tubes.

Can you change the steerer tube on Fox forks?

It all depends on the method of construction. Steering tube removal could cause damage to fork crowns if Fox uses an interference fit with a tighter tolerance. Once the steer tube has been replaced, Marzocchi will use a press fit to do so.

Are MTB forks universal?

Unfortunately, no. Forks come in a variety of sizes, and the first consideration is wheel size. Mountain bikes come in three different wheel sizes: 26 inches, 27.5 inches (650B), and 29 inches, each requiring a different fork size.

How much spacers is too much?

The steerer’s highest point should be 3-4 millimetres higher than the stem’s highest clampbolt. Manufacturers recommend no more than 40mm of spacers under the stem for carbon steerers. Having a stem with a steeper rise is necessary if you cannot add spacers under the stem to achieve the correct bar height.

What does a headset spacer do?

For BMX, MTB, and road riders, headset spacers allow you to easily adjust the height of your handlebars, which is a critical component of bike fit. The proper bar height is critical for both comfort and performance when riding a bike on the road.

Do I need a spacer above my stem?

As little as a millimetre can be added to the top of the stem clamp above the clamp. At least 3mm of spacer above the stem clamp is required to allow the top cap’s push down on the stem to be pushed down by the spacer; otherwise, it would bottom out on the stem.

Do I need a headset spacer?

There is no need to use spacers between the headset and stem. If you don’t put everything together, it’s impossible to know what you’ll need.

What does slamming the stem mean?

When you slam your stem, you lower it to the lowest point possible.

Are all mountain bike forks the same size?

26in, 27.5/650B, and 29in wheels are all options for mountain bike forks. What size fork do you need for your 27.5/650B or 29in wheels?

What is stack height on a bike stem?

The headset’s stack height is the amount of vertical space it occupies. The steerer tube is longer than the head tube in a conventional threaded fork.

Is a carbon fork worth it?

For a fraction of the cost of a carbon-only bike, a light aluminium frame can be combined with a carbon fork to produce a very light bike. Aluminum and carbon are both lightweight and inexpensive, and this strategy combines the advantages of both materials while reducing production costs.

Can you use a pipe cutter on carbon fibre?

The short answer: Carbon bars can technically be cut with a pipe cutter, but this is not recommended due to the risk of damaging the handlebars.
