There is a symbol located on the bottom of every glass dish and it can be used to determine if the glass is oven safe. There are two types of symbols: one that has a small triangle with a line in it and another that has an entire upper half outline of a circle filled in. If you place them side-by-side like the image below, the individual will see a small triangle next to a circle filled in. This means that the glass should not be heated over 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

How the symbols work together: The black circle with a line through it indicates ceramic or metal under it and is safe for ovens up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. It will withstand temperatures of 400 degrees above sea level, but if your altitude is above that, you should check the manufacturer’s guidelines. If the oven has a broil setting then it can be used on ceramic or metal dishes with this symbol. The small triangle in the image means that there is metal in between two layers of glass and the dish cannot be heated in an oven.

The upper half circle filled in means that the glass is safe for ovens up to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. It will withstand temperatures of 500 degrees above sea level, but if your altitude is above that, you should check the manufacturer’s guidelines. If there is a broil setting then it can be used on dishes with this symbol. The small triangle in the image means that there is metal in between two layers of glass and the dish cannot be heated on a stovetop or in an oven.

When you are setting your oven temperature, understand that it is usually 200 degrees higher than what is indicated on the dials. That makes the broil temperature at 550 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 450 degrees Fahrenheit because your oven temperature actually goes to 650 degrees Fahrenheit.

Glass with a large circle filled in is safe for ovens up to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. It will withstand temperatures of 500 degrees above sea level, but if your altitude is above that, you should check the manufacturer’s guidelines. If there is a broil setting then it can be used on dishes with this symbol.
