The absence of synthetic chemicals makes it less harmful to the environment and, in general, less expensive. It’s a win-win. There are a variety of options however nothing is as natural as urine! What is the reason that human urine can repel animals? The answer is largely on the animal that you are trying to deter.

Does human urine deter cats?

If local cats tend to congregate in your backyard you might want to test urine to keep them out. The morning urine (likely to be the most potent during all) is believed to act as a deterrent to certain cats. The male urine is believed as the best however female urine is also effective. While some gardeners believe it’s a fantastic natural repellent, others have not seen any benefit. However, there’s nothing to risk!

Does human urine deter mice?

Mice don’t appear to be able to sense fear in the presence of human urine. Unfortunately, peeing in your garden will not repel them! The reason is that they aren’t the natural prey, animals understand that they don’t need to be wary of us and our scents. However, the fox is naturally a predator to mice, and therefore fox urine is more likely to repel mice. This is the base of certain pest repellents that are available on the market.

Does human urine deter deer?

It is often debated in the world of hunting whether peeing attracted those around or makes them fearful. Certain hunters keep their pees to keep deer from running away. Others profit from nature’s curiosity in deer that they believe are attracted by the scents of their surroundings. If it’s human urine and deer the question of whether it repels them isn’t known for certain. It might be best to install a fence.

Does human urine deter foxes?

Beautiful to look at, but it’s a nightmare for gardeners as the foxes can cause havoc in backyards across America. They’ll tear up the flower beds of your garden, make burrows and devour your vegetable patches. Male foxes establish territory. Human urine could sometimes stop this from happening – and even stop the above from occurring.

Human male urine scattered all around the garden will mask the strong smell of urine of foxes. It could cause them to be sent to the dump. But, to be a sustainable solution, you (or someone else who is willing) must perform this routinely.

Are there any disadvantages to using pee as an animal repellent?

The most significant issue is that urine from humans does not repel animals in the same way as other urine. In fact, it may be a magnet for certain. There is no point in repelling a cat if you are attracting deer!

It’s not as easy as stepping into the garden and peeing, unfortunately. Urine is a mix of substances.

In excess amounts of inorganic salts and nitrogen which are present in urine, aren’t good for plants. It is possible to prevent excessive damages to nitrogen by diluting urine with water. The guidelines vary for 1 part urine and between 10 and 15 portions of water. The amount of urine that can be diluted varies from person to person, therefore there is no standard dosage for dilution – it’s an experiment in trial and error similar to experimenting with human urine in the garden.

Conclusion

The evidence that human urine is repelling animals is not convincing. However, since it’s not expensive and is safe (if dilute), it’s worth a try before you decide to go with other commercial alternatives based on chemicals.
